Tribal Historic Preservation Office (THPO)

The Tribal Historic Preservation Office’s responsibilities and duties include:

Protect and preserve Pezihutazizi Oyate heritage, ensuring cultural sites, traditions, and history are respected and carried forward for future generations.

On August 3, 2011, the Upper Sioux Community (Pezihutazizi Oyate) officically establisted its Tribal Historic Preservation Office (THPO). This designation, approved by the National Park Service (NPS) under the National Historic Preservation Act, granted the Tribe authority to manage and protect historic properties and preserve cultural traditions on its lands in Minnesota. It also enables the Tribe to advise federal agencies during Section 106 review processes.
